Peeking above the rooftops, the Bunker Pasing stands as a stark reminder of a turbulent past. Today we explore this imposing structure. This is not just a pile of concrete. It is a silent witness to Munich’s wartime experiences.

By the end of the war Munich constructed 48 above-ground air raid shelters. These bunkers followed the plans of city planning officer Karl Meitinger. The Bunker Pasing dates back to 1941. It offered refuge during air raids.

Imagine the scene in 1941. Air raid sirens blare. Families rush to the bunker, seeking safety within its thick walls. Up to 1,200 people could find shelter here on its six floors. The walls are 1.80 meters thick providing protection.

The Bunker Pasing served a vital purpose. It offered a safe haven during the chaos of war. Its narrow windows and ventilation slits hint at its original function. They were necessary for survival within its confined space.

After the war the bunker’s role evolved. It was briefly used as a shelter for the homeless. This speaks to the desperate need for housing in post-war Munich.

But the story of the Bunker Pasing does not end there. It reflects the changing needs of the city. It was rented out as a hotel in 1946. The “Bunkerhotel” offered unique accommodation.

However, this venture was short-lived. In 1950, the lease was cancelled. The St. Anna Ladies’ Convent reclaimed the property.

For years the bunker stood unused after 2009. It awaited a new purpose. In 2012, a discotheque moved in. “Herr Hotter” became a popular spot in Munich’s nightlife.

This transformation was also temporary. Noise complaints led to its closure after six months. The bunker has been empty since 2013.

Since 2019, the Museum of Urban and Contemporary Art, MUCA, has breathed new life into the bunker. It stages modern installations and art exhibitions. It gives the building a new cultural significance.

Today, the Bunker Pasing is a public center for architecture. It provides space for the architecture gallery since 2021. It serves as a platform for discussions about architecture and related topics. The high-rise bunker blends into the cityscape.

Consider the layers of history embedded in the Bunker Pasing. From air raid shelter to hotel to nightclub to art space, it has adapted. It reflects Munich’s resilience and its capacity for reinvention. The Bunker Pasing stands as a testament to Munich’s past. It now embraces a future dedicated to art and architectural dialogue.
