In the heart of Gippsland lies Buln Buln, a town whose name echoes the song of the superb lyrebird. Buln Buln’s story begins not with grand pronouncements, but with the quiet rustling of feathers and the creak of wagon wheels along the Old Sale Road. This was the original Gippsland track. It predates the railway towns of Drouin and Warragul. Buln Buln’s heart beat with the rhythm of early settlers. They arrived in the 1870s, carving farmsteads from the bush along Brandy Creek. Children from Buln Buln initially attended school at Brandy Creek. Then in 1878, a school opened in the Buln Buln village hall. A proper school building followed in 1884, with the current structure built in 1909. The arrival of the railway in 1890, connecting Drouin to Rokeby and stopping at Buln Buln, brought new life. Buildings migrated from Brandy Creek, including a Protestant church. A cooperative creamery churned from 1893 to 1902. Buln Buln in 1903 boasted a post office, several stores and churches. The town even had a mechanics’ institute. The 20th century saw shifts. Warragul’s growth overshadowed Buln Buln. Businesses closed as residents turned to Warragul for services. The railway line fell silent in 1958. The old station became a recreation reserve in 1977. Today, as you approach Buln Buln along the Old Sale Road, you’ll be greeted by an avenue of honor. Elm trees line the road, leading you past the recreation reserve and the well-preserved school. The Anglican/Uniting church stands on Station Street. Buln Buln, once a bustling hub, now stands as a quiet testament to its pioneering past. The lyrebird’s song still echoes in its name, a reminder of the town’s connection to the land and its history.
