“Lyrebird”. That’s what Bulleen means in the language of the Manna Gum people. For thousands of years, they thrived here. The Bulleen billabongs fed them. Imagine them fishing and holding corroborees. This land whispers stories of their ancient connection.

Now we stand in Bulleen a suburb 13 km northeast of Melbourne’s center. It is a vibrant community with a rich history. Bulleen’s story is a fascinating mix of Indigenous heritage and European settlement.

In 1841, Frederic Unwin purchased a vast area of land that included today’s Bulleen. He bought 5,120 acres for one pound an acre. It was known as Unwin’s Special Survey.

The first Bulleen Post Office opened in 1952 marking a new chapter. Over time, it changed names reflecting the area’s growth. Bulleen Plaza became the main shopping hub with a library, post office and shops.

Bulleen’s climate can be extreme. It once recorded a scorching 49 degrees Celsius. Yet, it can also be cooler than the city.

Bulleen offers diverse attractions. The Yarra River borders the suburb. Banksia Park provides bike paths and picnic spots. Heide Museum of Modern Art showcases art and culture. Bulleen Park has grounds for sports and recreation.
