Picture a tranquil haven nestled beside the Yarra River. This is Bulleen a vibrant suburb in Melbourne’s east. Bulleen’s story begins long before European settlement. For about 5000 years the Manna Gum people thrived here. The Bulleen billabongs were vital. They provided abundant food fish and ducks. Bolin the largest billabong was a special place. It hosted important Aboriginal gatherings and corroborees.

Then came Frederic Unwin a Sydney solicitor. In 1841 he bought a massive 5120 acres. This included all of present-day Bulleen. He paid just one pound per acre. The land became known as Unwin’s Special Survey. It was ideal for dairying and growing cereals. Large homesteads dotted the landscape.

Bulleen remained largely rural for a long time. Public transport was scarce. The area was isolated from Melbourne. World War II brought change. Bulleen’s produce fed the armed forces. Dairying remained important until the 1930s. Shopping was limited to one local store or a trip across the river to Heidelberg.

Residential growth started in the 1950s. A primary school opened in 1957. The Bulleen Post Office opened in 1952. It was renamed Bulleen West in 1960 and closed in 1976. Another post office Bulleen South opened in 1959 changing names several times.

The 1970s saw the construction of Bulleen Plaza. This shopping center transformed the suburb. A Catholic primary school opened in 1963. The Veneto Social Club a hub for the Italian community opened in 1973.

Bulleen’s natural beauty drew artists John and Sunday Reed. They bought a property in 1930. Their art collection and home became the Heide Museum of Modern Art a major attraction. The Reeds’ support of artists like Sydney Nolan enriched the museum’s collection.

By the 1980s Bulleen was largely developed. The river flats became home to the sports facilities of private schools. The Yarra Valley Country Club also found a place there.

Today Bulleen is a blend of history and modern life. It offers stunning parks extensive sporting facilities and a thriving community. This quiet suburb near the Yarra has a rich history. It was shaped by its Aboriginal past European settlers and its diverse modern residents. Bulleen is a testament to Melbourne’s layered history. It is a place where past and present seamlessly coexist.
