What inspired a ten-foot bronze bull to land in Roehampton? Here at the Bull Statue, we unravel this tale. The Bull Statue isn’t just a random piece of metal. It’s a Grade II* listed sculpture by Robert Clatworthy. It arrived here on Danebury Avenue in 1961. The London County Council commissioned this powerful beast, thanks to architect A. W. Cleeve Barr. He was a key figure behind the Alton Estate, where the Bull now stands. The Bull Statue wasn’t born in bronze. It began as a 1953 plaster model. It made its debut at Holland Park in 1957. The final bronze version took shape in 1959. Clatworthy’s inspiration? A real bull grazing in a field near his Sussex studio. He sought to capture the “sheer physical power” of the animal. The Bull Statue reflects that raw energy. Notice its head slightly turned towards the road. Its body is a collection of irregular geometric shapes. It’s “a heroic yet friendly image…a study in movement arrested.” Clatworthy described his work as a series of superimposed images. As the light shifts or you move, different aspects of the bull emerge. The Bull Statue initially stood in a grassy area. Now, it’s surrounded by plants in the landscape of the Alton Estate. This was a pioneering post-war housing project, considered “the finest low-cost housing development in the world.” The Bull Statue has witnessed changes. It’s faced dirt, spray paint, and corrosion. But in 2024, Wandsworth Council stepped in with a restoration project. The Bull Statue was cleaned and protected, ready for generations to admire. The Bull Statue’s journey from field to plaster to bronze reminds us of the power of inspiration. It reminds us of the importance of public art and the stories it silently tells.
