Ten feet long and cast in bronze the Bull stands before us. This is not just any sculpture. It’s a Grade II listed artwork by Robert Clatworthy. Have you ever wondered about the story behind this powerful figure?

The Bull was created by Robert Clatworthy in 1959. Clatworthy was inspired by a bull in a Sussex field near his studio. He wanted to capture the animal’s raw physical power. The 1961 bronze version was commissioned by the London County Council. A. W. Cleeve Barr was the lead architect for the Alton Estate. He pushed for the commission.

Clatworthy’s Bull is more than just a statue. It’s an expressionistic figure. The bull seems about to turn its head. It is a heroic yet friendly image. The sculpture captures arrested movement. Clatworthy noted that the light plays tricks on the eye. Different images emerge as you move around the sculpture.

Robert Clatworthy was a major figure in British art. He was even considered second only to Henry Moore. He headed the Fine Art Department at the Central School of Art and Design. He was a fellow of the Royal Academy of Arts.

The Alton Estate provides a backdrop for the Bull. It was built between 1954 and 1961. The estate was considered a pioneering low-cost housing development. The Bull originally stood in an open field. Over time the area was planted with greenery.

In October 2024, the Bull was restored. Wandsworth Council oversaw the work. The History of London Trust collaborated on the project. The restoration removed dirt spray paint and corrosion. A patination solution was applied to reduce graffiti. The sculpture was rewaxed.

The Mayor of Wandsworth praised the restored Bull. She called it a testament to resilience and creativity. A local resident recalled the sculpture’s installation in 1961. He admitted initial disappointment because they wanted a playground. But he agreed that the Bull was the right choice in the end. Another resident was pleased with the new plaque. Now everyone can learn about the Bull.

The Bull has stood here for over 60 years. It embodies strength and artistry. Take a moment to appreciate Clatworthy’s vision. Consider the bull’s powerful presence. It reflects the spirit of Roehampton. It stands as a landmark for generations to come.
