Gazing across the Golden Horn, did you ever imagine a church made of iron? This, my friends, is the Bulgarian Church of St. Stephen, also known as the Iron Church. A true testament to human ingenuity and a symbol of the Bulgarian Orthodox community in Istanbul. The Bulgarian Church of St. Stephen isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a landmark steeped in history, a symbol of resilience, and an architectural marvel. Let’s journey back to the 19th century, a time when the Bulgarian Orthodox Christians in Istanbul yearned for their own church, separate from the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate. They first established a small wooden church in 1849. This wooden structure, a gift from statesman Stefan Bogoridi, became a hub of the Bulgarian National Revival. It was here that the Ottoman decree recognizing the Bulgarian Exarchate was first read in 1870. Sadly, fire ravaged the wooden church. But from the ashes rose an even grander vision. The current Bulgarian Church of St. Stephen, with its prefabricated cast iron elements, was born. It’s an extraordinary feat of engineering. Imagine 500 tons of prefabricated iron parts, crafted in Vienna by R. Ph. Waagner. These pieces traveled by ship, down the Danube and across the Black Sea, to be assembled here on the banks of the Golden Horn. The architect behind this unique design was Hovsep Aznavur, an Ottoman Armenian. He chose iron due to the unstable ground conditions, a testament to his foresight. The Bulgarian Church of St. Stephen opened its doors in 1898, a beacon of Neo-Byzantine and Neo-Baroque styles. Inside, the ornate wooden iconostasis, crafted in Moscow, adds another layer of artistry to this iron marvel. The six bells, cast in Yaroslavl, ring out across the Golden Horn, a call to prayer and a symbol of enduring faith. Over the years, the Bulgarian Church of St. Stephen has undergone renovations. The most recent, completed in 2018, restored it to its former glory. The dome gleams with gold, a gift from the Bulgarians of Plovdiv. The Bulgarian Church of St. Stephen is more than just an iron structure. It’s a symbol of a community’s perseverance, a fusion of architectural styles, and a unique landmark in Istanbul’s diverse tapestry.
