Whispers of faith echo through time. This is Bukit Panjang Methodist Church. We stand before a testament to unwavering devotion. Established in 1937 it began as a small Hokkien congregation. A humble gathering in a charcoal shop. It was a testament to the faith of a young man. Lim Kim Seng a former Buddhist. He found Christ after a revival rally led by Dr John Sung. This marked the genesis of Bukit Panjang Methodist Church.
The church’s early years were marked by challenges. The Japanese Occupation saw services temporarily halted. The building was damaged. Yet the congregation persevered. They met in an attap house maintaining their faith through hardship. The church was renamed Bukit Panjang Gospel Hall in 1938.
Growth followed. By 1950 around 100 worshippers filled the attap house. A new building was needed. Acquiring land proved difficult. Financial constraints were a challenge. Finally in 1958 two shophouses were purchased. The upper floor became a sanctuary. The lower floor was used for kindergarten classrooms.
The congregation continued to expand. By 1967 they were bursting at the seams. Another fundraising campaign began. A new site was purchased in 1970. The groundbreaking ceremony for the current building took place in 1977. The church moved to a zinc roofed house temporarily during construction. The new building was dedicated in 1978.
The English service started in 1980. Separate English and Chinese Sunday Schools choirs and youth groups were formed. In 1985 the Bukit Panjang Methodist Church Kindergarten opened. This expanded their community outreach.
As the church grew a second building was needed. A new sanctuary and facilities opened in 2001. Now the church holds multiple services in three languages. It continues to serve its community.
Today Bukit Panjang Methodist Church stands as a symbol of resilience. It is a multi-ethnic multi-generational community of faith. Its history is a powerful testament to faith’s enduring power. Its mission is to create deeply devoted disciples. The church seeks to fulfill the Great Commission. It strives to become an authentic disciple-making church. Each generation builds upon the foundation laid by those who came before. Each generation continues the legacy of faith and service that defines Bukit Panjang Methodist Church.
