Envision standing atop Bukit Ginting. Known by locals as Little Genting it offers a cool evening breeze. This hill is in Penang’s southwest. It lies on the route to Balik Pulau. Balik Pulau is famous for its durian.

To reach Bukit Ginting requires a skilled driver. The road is steep. It is a one-car-width path. The path is one way up and another way downhill. Reaching the summit is worthwhile. Sunset views are especially rewarding.

Bukit Genting Hill Leisure Park and Restaurant are located here. An unattractive arch announces the park. The owner repeats hill twice in the name. Bukit means hill in Malay.

If you are worried about the road you can park below. You can summon the operators to ferry you up. However a normal car can make the journey. You do not need a 4-WD. The sealed road is narrow and windy. Novice drivers might feel intimidated. Experienced drivers should find it manageable. The initial stretch is two-way. It passes through a durian plantation. The road splits later. One way goes up and the other comes down.

The Leisure Park has seen better days. An air of neglect permeates the area. Underwhelming decorations make up the attractions. There are animal statues and a helicopter mock-up. Fake rabbits hide among the shrubbery. A sailing ship stands here. Why? I don’t know.

Wooden pavilions offer stunning views. Chalets are available for overnight stays. A Thai restaurant sits atop Bukit Genting. The food might not be Penang’s best Thai. The amazing views compensate for it.

The restaurant’s opening hours are 11.30am to 10.30pm. The phone number is 04-629 9801. GPS coordinates are 5.308917 100.220533.

Before dining appreciate the vista. See Teluk Kumbar and Gertak Sanggul. Admire Penang’s southern part. The western coast’s rural beauty is spectacular. You can clearly see Betong island. It sits off the coast from the fishing village.

The views at sunset are amazing. This is a must-visit location. Forested hills surround you. There are views to Teluk Kumbar. You can see the south of the island. The western coast and Balik Pulau are also visible.
Bukit Genting’s spectacular views make it special.
