“What’s in a name?” you might ask as we stand at the foot of Bukit Chandan. This hill, Bukit Chandan, holds a story far more captivating than its modest elevation suggests.

Bukit Chandan is a state constituency in Perak, Malaysia. But its history goes back further.

Legend says the name Bukit Chandan comes from Sultan Yusuf’s elephant. The elephant’s name was Kulup Chandan. One day, Kulup Chandan wandered off. Raja Idris searched for the elephant with his men. They followed the tracks all the way to Gunung Bubu. There, Raja Idris met an old man with a white robe. The old man told Raja Idris he would be the next Sultan of Perak. He advised Raja Idris to build his palace on a hill by the Perak River. The old man instructed him to free Kulup Chandan seven days after his coronation. Raja Idris became the 28th Sultan of Perak. He followed the old man’s advice. From that day on, the hill was known as Bukit Chandan. It became the site of the Sultan of Perak’s official palace.

Bukit Chandan’s significance goes beyond royal residences. Overlooking the Perak River, Bukit Candan offers serene views. Many people relax at the Bukit Chandan Rest House. They sip teh tarik while watching the evening sun.

The town of Kuala Kangsar is beautiful. This is attributed to the architecture, the river and the history behind it. The panoramic view of the river can be seen from Bukit Chandan.

Bukit Chandan also boasts stunning pre-war architecture. Here lie some prominent pre-war buildings. The Ubuddiah Mosque with golden domes and minarets, was built in 1913 and opened in 1917. Istana Iskandariah was built in 1932. It remains the Sultan of Perak’s official residence.

Another palace in Bukit Chandan is Istana Hulu. It blends colonial and Malay styles. Built in 1903, it became Istana Kota National School in 1954. Later, it housed Raja Perempuan Muzwin School in 1970.

Bukit Chandan is more than just a hill. It is a place where history, royalty, and natural beauty converge. It is a reminder of Perak’s rich heritage. It is a place where legends come to life. As we leave Bukit Chandan, I hope you carry its stories with you. May you appreciate the blend of history and serenity that defines this remarkable place.
