Bukit Batok’s name has several interpretations. Bukit means hill in Malay. Batok is more complex. Some say it comes from the Javanese word for coconuts. Coconut trees once grew here. Others believe it refers to granite. The Chinese called it batu, meaning stone. This may have morphed into batok. The most evocative explanation links it to the quarries. The sound of explosions resembled a cough. Bukit Batok became Coughing Hill.
Before the 1940s, Bukit Batok was filled with rubber and pineapple plantations. Industrialization began. The Ford factory was built near Bukit Timah Road. During World War II, Bukit Batok became a strategic battleground. The British failed to defend it. They surrendered to the Japanese at the Ford Motor Factory in 1942. Winston Churchill called it the largest capitulation in British military history.
The Japanese occupied the Ford Factory. Nissan used it to supply military vehicles. Bukit Batok Hill and Bukit Timah Hill were key locations. They controlled the surrounding areas. General Yamashita ordered prisoners of war to build a memorial. It was called Syonan Chureito shrine. It stood on Bukit Batok Hill. Japanese officials worshipped their emperor there. After the war, the British returned. They resumed their industrialization plans. Bukit Batok was extensively quarried for granite. Poh Kim Quarry was one of these sites. It operated from the 1950s to the 1970s. It was later abandoned due to environmental damage.
After Singapore’s independence in 1965, the government promoted Bukit Batok. It became a light industrial area. In December 1975, the development of Bukit Batok New Town began. It transformed the village within a decade. Norite formations and ridges were preserved. They became features of Bukit Batok Nature Park and Bukit Batok Town Park.
Today, Bukit Batok is a thriving residential town. It is bordered by several other planning areas. These include Choa Chu Kang, Cashew, Clementi, and Jurong East. Bukit Batok is divided into nine subzones.
Bukit Batok’s main shopping complex is West Mall. It opened in 1998. It houses a post office, library, cineplex, shops, restaurants, and a supermarket. There are two MRT stations. They are Bukit Batok and Bukit Gombak.
