Wonder why Building 10 is also known as the Casey Building? Let’s uncover its story. It stands as a testament to RMIT’s growth and ambition.

The story of Building 10 starts in the 1960s. RMIT was expanding rapidly. It needed more space to accommodate its growing student population. Prime Minister Harold Holt laid the foundation stone in July 1967. This marked the beginning of a new era for RMIT.

Building 10 got its name from Lord Casey. He was the Governor-General at the time. RMIT made him an honorary fellow in June 1967. This honor was bestowed upon him the same year. The building officially opened in 1969.

Interestingly Building 10 shares a striking resemblance to Buildings 12 and 14. These three buildings were completed by 1976. They showcase a similar architectural style. This gives a sense of unity to this part of the RMIT campus.

The architecture firm Edquist and Grierson documented Building 10. Their book details the architecture and art of RMIT University. It highlights the building’s significance within the university’s landscape.

Building 10 is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a hub of activity. It connects to Buildings 8, 12, and 14. Level 4 serves as a major walkway. RMIT Connect and the Job Shop are located there.

Different levels within Building 10 offer diverse study spaces. These spaces are designed to cater to various needs. Level 7 even boasts a garden terrace and cafe. This provides a relaxing environment for students and staff.

The Swanson Library spans levels 5 and 6 of Building 10. It also extends into Buildings 8 and 12. The library’s main entrance is on level 5. It provides easy access for students seeking knowledge and resources.

After-hours access to Buildings 8, 10, 12, and 14 is available. Students can scan their cards at a specific door. This door is located off Bowen Street near Building 5. It allows for late-night study sessions.

However, in 1969, not all students were thrilled. Some students sang “burning and bombing” to the PM. This was reported in The Canberra Times.

Today Building 10 stands as a central landmark. It is more than just a building. It represents RMIT’s commitment to education. It embodies its dedication to student life. As you explore Building 10 remember its history. Remember its contribution to RMIT’s vibrant campus.
