From a small schoolhouse reeking of children to a modern institution, Buddinge Skole’s journey reflects the transformation of Buddinge itself. Buddinge Skole, established in 1875 as “Buddinge Byskovs Almindelige Landsbyskole,” stands as a testament to the community’s commitment to education. Originally located in Buddinge By, near a small town square and along what is now Søborg Hovedgade, the school’s early days were humble. Imagine children crammed into a small, poorly ventilated schoolhouse, often bringing their lunch to avoid going home. The conditions were so bad that in 1805, the priest complained of the “unbearable stench” and rampant “piggishness.” Despite requests, ventilation improvements were denied due to low student numbers. This situation, however, changed dramatically with the influx of new residents around 1900. A diphtheria epidemic, likely fueled by the school’s poor hygiene and overcrowding, further emphasized the urgent need for change. A new school was constructed in 1901. This second Buddinge Skole, inaugurated in 1902, served the community briefly. By 1908, its students were redistributed to Søborg and Gladsaxe Skoler. The building itself was repurposed to house the growing municipal administration. This marked Buddinge Skole’s unexpected role in Gladsaxe’s civic development. A third Buddinge Skole, designed by Eva and Niels Koppel, opened in 1955. This modern building shared its space with Gladsaxe Gymnasium and, from 1964, Gladsaxe Teater. Space constraints eventually led to the construction of the fourth and current Buddinge Skole in 1980. This move, a procession of students and teachers from the old to the new building, symbolized the ongoing evolution of education in Buddinge. Today, Buddinge Skole continues to serve the community. It stands as a modern institution, offering education from 0th to 9th grade, plus specialized instruction. Its journey from a small, inadequate schoolhouse to its current form mirrors the growth and modernization of Buddinge itself.
