Perched high on Penang Hill the Buddhist Light Vihara beckons. Its story begins not with grand pronouncements but with a quiet bungalow. Built in 1923 by Mr Lim Choy Tin it offered stunning views. After Mr Lim’s passing his son Mr Lim Peng Tor became trustee. The Lim family welcomed Buddhist monks creating a sanctuary of peace.
This unassuming house became the Buddhist Light Vihara in 1986. Venerable Siew Chin a devoted monk purchased it transforming the space. It remained a haven for contemplation under the care of successive monks. Today Venerable Dr Chuan Chao continues this legacy.
The former living room now houses a prayer hall. A large Buddha image dominates the space. The servant quarters expanded into a spacious kitchen. This is vital for preparing food during festivals. Upstairs monks reside and offer lodging to overnight guests. A driveway from Viaduct Road leads to a front garden.
This isn’t just a religious site. It’s a testament to family generosity a spiritual refuge and a place where history quietly unfolds. The grounds now boast a Nature Green Farm an orchard. This adds to the serene atmosphere. The 100th anniversary celebration drew many visitors. Former Chief Minister Mr Lim Guan Eng even spoke.
