Deep within the serene Yarra Ranges, nestled near Melbourne, lies the Buddha Bodhivana Monastery. A place of peace, a sanctuary for the soul. Its name, a melody in itself, translates to “Forest of the Buddha’s Enlightened Knowledge.” Buddha Bodhivana Monastery’s story began not in Australia, but in the heart of Thailand. The late Phra Bodhinyana Thera, also known as Ajahn Chah, was a revered meditation master. His teachings resonated far beyond his homeland, reaching the shores of Australia. In 1998, two of Ajahn Chah’s disciples, Ajahn Anan and Ajahn Kalyano, journeyed to Australia to share the wisdom of meditation. Their visit sparked a flame of inspiration in Bee Lian Soo. She, along with Jeffrey Tan and members of the Soo family, envisioned a tranquil forest monastery in Victoria. This vision led to the creation of the Victoria Sangha Association in September 2000. Their mission was to find the perfect location, a haven where the teachings of the Buddha could flourish. Their search culminated in the discovery of 75 acres of pristine forest. It bordered the magnificent Yarra Ranges National Park, just 80 kilometers east of Melbourne. This land would become the home of Buddha Bodhivana Monastery. In a gesture of profound generosity, the title deed was offered to Ajahn Anan on December 5, 2000, coinciding with the birthday of the late Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Ajahn Anan bestowed the name “Buddha Bodhivana Monastery” upon this sacred ground. In 2001, Ajahn Kalyano took up residence at Buddha Bodhivana Monastery. He continues to guide the monastery’s growth as its Abbot. The monastery serves as a training ground for Buddhist monks, novices, and postulants. It also opens its doors to all who seek solace and wisdom. Individuals, families, and visitors are welcomed to immerse themselves in the principles of the Buddha’s teachings. Buddha Bodhivana Monastery stands as a testament to the power of vision, generosity, and the enduring wisdom of the Buddha. It’s a place where the whispers of the forest mingle with the echoes of ancient teachings, inviting all to seek enlightenment within its peaceful embrace.
