Dating back to 1857, the Faculty of Finance and Accountancy at Budapest University of Economics has been a cornerstone of Hungarian economic education. Its story is one of evolution adaptation and a commitment to excellence. Today we stand before a place where future financial leaders are shaped.

Let’s delve into the history of this esteemed institution. Its roots trace back to the Pest Academy of Commerce. This academy was a pioneering initiative for Hungarian higher economic programs. Later it became the Eastern Academy of Commerce. A pivotal moment arrived in 1953. The College of Accountancy was established. This is considered the true starting point of the Faculty of Finance and Accountancy. Initially the college was located on Mester Street. It occupied the building that now houses the Szent István Vocational High School.

However the journey wasn’t without its challenges. Due to budget constraints education was temporarily suspended between 1959 and 1962. But the spirit of the institution persevered. In 1962 it reopened as the Higher School of Finance and Accountancy. Then a new chapter began in the academic year 1970 to 1971. It was renamed the College of Finance and Accountancy. This is when the college moved to its current location. Here on Buzogány Street in District XIV also known as Zugló.

The college expanded its reach establishing institutes in Zalaegerszeg in 1971 to 1972. Salgótarján followed the next year. These expansions solidified its position as a leading institution for finance and accountancy education in Hungary. The College of Finance and Accountancy experienced a significant change in 2000. It merged with the College of International Management and Business. Also it merged with the College of Commerce Hospitality and Tourism. This merger formed the Budapest Business School.

The Faculty of Finance and Accountancy became an independent faculty within the Budapest Business School. It maintained its independence even after the school achieved university status in 2016. Today the Faculty of Finance and Accountancy operates on two campuses in Budapest. The Buzogány Street campus serves as the central hub. It has seen remarkable developments in recent years.

In 2018 lecture hall three was renovated through collaboration with ProcessSolution. In 2019 UniCredit provided funding for the Fintelligence Financial Education Centre. The campus also embraced sustainability initiatives. The first floor “green wall” was completed that year. Furthering its commitment to growth the Faculty building in Zugló is set for expansion. A new central library cultural and sports facilities and a multifunctional student center are planned. These additions will significantly enhance the campus. The enclosed area will increase by 1750 square meters. A 650 square meter green roof and a 560 square meter community space will be created. The new multifunctional center will cater to the needs of the modern student.

Beyond traditional library resources it will offer flexible community spaces. Cultural and sports functions will also be prioritized. Roof gardens and terraces will provide relaxation areas. These spaces will promote environmental awareness. They also reflect the university’s dedication to sustainability. The Berzsenyi Street campus is another key location. It was inaugurated on August 30 2017. This “smart campus” focuses on business development. It also houses the master’s degree Program in Business Management. Also the Team Academy training and the Budapest LAB Entrepreneurship Centre are here.

The Bagolyvár Hall of Residence provides accommodation for 374 students. It is located in Zugló on Bagolyvár Street. It offers a comfortable environment conducive to studying and relaxation. The Budapest University of Economics Faculty of Finance and Accountancy stands as a testament to Hungary’s commitment to financial education. From its humble beginnings as the Pest Academy of Commerce to its current status as a leading faculty it continues to evolve. It adapts to the changing needs of students and the financial world. As we conclude our visit remember that this institution has been shaping financial leaders for generations.
