Consider the tale of a church built not as a church at all. The story of Budapest-Széphalom Jézus Szíve plébániatemplom is a testament to faith. It also shows resilience during challenging times.
Budapest-Széphalom Jézus Szíve plébániatemplom stands here in the 2nd district. However, its history is far more interesting than its location. It is situated on the corner of Kossuth Lajos utca and Petőfi Sándor utca. This church is in the Remetekertváros neighborhood. The church name is misleading because the parish office resides in Széphalom.
After World War II, religious expression faced obstacles. In 1944, a small chapel was established in a classroom. This was in the separated area of Pesthidegkút Ófalu, in Széphalom. Then, in 1946, the church received a generous gift. Pál Faragó and his wife donated their family home. From this, the community created a small chapel. Later, they added a bell tower. It housed two small bells.
As the area transformed into a residential zone, the chapel became too small. Between 1948 and 1951, László Pödör, a dedicated pastor, took action. Together with Sándor Marosi, an architect, they built a larger chapel. It was about 210 square meters. They built it on purchased land at the corner of Kossuth Lajos utca and Petőfi Sándor utca. Due to the era’s poverty, its style was simple. The “system” only allowed this much.
The authorities attempted to seize the half-finished building. But the locals acted swiftly. One night, they moved the altar and benches from the old chapel. The next day, in 1951, József Szabadkai consecrated the building. This ensured it would forever be a church.
In 1964, Lajos Shvoy elevated it to a parish church. Later, in 1980, Erzsébet Egyed donated the parish building. It stood at 3 Kazinczy utca. In 1995, a 52 square meter classroom was added. The church also underwent external renovations.
Over the years, Budapest-Széphalom Jézus Szíve plébániatemplom has seen many changes. Sándor Paróczay built an upstairs room. János Tarnóczi modernized the liturgical space. During András Gromon’s time, a large community room was built. János Székely oversaw a complete roof replacement. The entire building was reconstructed. István Molnár and Gábor Gyimóthy completed this work.
The open roof frame and higher pitched roof enhanced its sacred feel. The entrance colonnade was reinforced. The acoustics for the organ improved too. In 2008, under Gábor Gyetván, the church received a new organ. It featured new designs and elements.
Today, Budapest-Széphalom Jézus Szíve plébániatemplom stands. It is a symbol of faith and community spirit. It overcame adversity. Its story is etched in every stone. It is a place of worship and a testament to perseverance.
