From a bombed-out barack to a hidden sanctuary, the Budapest-Küllső-Üllői úti Református Egyházközség temploma has a story to tell. Here we stand before it, a testament to resilience and faith. Let’s step back in time to the 1920s. The Mária Valéria colony, now József Attila housing estate, was growing. A small group of Reformed Christians began to gather. The Budapest-Küllső-Üllői úti Református Egyházközség temploma wasn’t here yet. These early worshippers met in homes, kindergartens, even school gymnasiums. Imagine their joy in 1938 when the Küllső-Üllői Missziói Egyházközség officially formed. A small, barrack-like church was built on Üllői út, numbers 161-163, offering a proper home for their faith. This humble structure served the growing community for decades. But progress, as it often does, came at a cost. In 1974, the construction of the metro line demanded the church’s demolition. The very spot where it stood now lies beneath the Pöttyös utca metro station. The community was scattered, their spiritual home reduced to rubble. It would be nearly a decade before they could rebuild. Finally, in 1983, with the help of reparations and support from the church district, a new location was found. This unassuming building at 9/a Bihari utca, once a wine shop, was transformed. The structure was expanded and renovated. Architect Nagy Béla envisioned a unique design: the sanctuary would be nestled in the attic space. By 1989, the Budapest-Küllső-Üllői úti Református Egyházközség temploma was reborn, its sanctuary hidden high within this repurposed building. The bell tower followed in 1994, completing this symbol of unwavering faith. The Budapest-Küllső-Üllői úti Református Egyházközség temploma stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of this congregation. It’s a reminder that even amidst destruction and displacement, faith can find a way to flourish, often in the most unexpected places.
