“Martyrdom knows no geographical or denominational boundaries.” These words echo within the walls of Budakeszi Evangélikus Templom. This is no ordinary church. It is a monument to faith and sacrifice.
Budakeszi Evangélikus Templom stands as a beacon. It shines in a world often turning away from God. The church is dedicated to 20th and 21st-century Christian martyrs. Its design reflects this solemn dedication.
Look at the roof. It is supported by six pillars. These pillars represent the Carpathian Basin and the five continents. Each pillar bears the names of twelve martyrs. They represent different denominations. Seventy-two names in total.
The architect László Benczúr designed the Budakeszi Evangélikus Templom. The building has an elliptical floor plan. This symbolizes the Budakeszi congregation. Above the baptistery and pulpit, a skylight opens the roof. This creates a unique lighting effect.
Notice the tower. It is made of exposed concrete. It reaches a height of 18.5 meters. Miklós Gombos created the bells within. Two reinforced concrete walls support the tower. They symbolize hands reaching for help from above.
The organ has an interesting history. It was removed from the side aisle of the Speyer Cathedral in Germany. Then it found a new home here in Budakeszi Evangélikus Templom. The church can accommodate one hundred to one hundred and twenty people. There is also a community space.
In 2021, Fabiny Tamás dedicated the Budakeszi Evangélikus Templom. He is the presiding bishop of the Hungarian Lutheran Church. During the dedication, he emphasized the church’s role. It is a gateway to heaven. It signals from the sacred. It is meant for a world distancing itself from God.
The dedication was a joyous occasion. Church and state leaders offered their greetings. Hundreds of people attended. The event concluded with a reception.
Lacknerné Puskás Sára is the pastor of the Budakeszi Evangelical Congregation. She received the key to the church from Fabiny Tamás. This symbolized the opening of a new chapter for the community.
During the ceremony, speakers highlighted the significance. They honored the martyrs. They emphasized the importance of Christian unity. They spoke of Hungary’s commitment to aiding persecuted Christians worldwide.
The Hungarian government supported the construction. They contributed 330 million forints. This demonstrates a commitment to religious life and community.
