Could a forest be more than just trees? At the Budakeszi Arboretum, it most certainly is. This isn’t just a collection of trees. It’s a living library of nature’s wisdom, a testament to the dedication of those who shaped it. The Budakeszi Arboretum officially opened its gates in 1959. However, its story begins a decade earlier. In 1949, the Institute of Forestry Science established a research station here. This wasn’t simply planting trees. They embarked on a large-scale afforestation project, transforming the landscape. The arboretum’s early years were marked by a rapid expansion of plant species. The team worked tirelessly to protect these young saplings from wildlife, eventually enclosing the area. This young forest provided the perfect setting for experimental plots in 1955. The site evolved into a carefully cultivated collection of exotic trees. The first comprehensive assessment of the arboretum took place around 1970. Galambos Gáspár, the arboretum’s founder, led a detailed evaluation of the then 1060 plant varieties. The Budakeszi Arboretum continued to evolve. The youngest sections were planted in 1979-1980. Many of these additions were grown from the arboretum’s own seedlings. In 1978, the Budakeszi Arboretum achieved protected status. Today, it’s a highly protected area. The Budakeszi Arboretum offers a glimpse into the intricate workings of nature. It serves as a reminder of the delicate balance within our ecosystem.
