Ever wonder what it takes to transform a former entertainment venue into a house of worship? Here at Budahegyvidéki Református Egyházközség, the story is quite remarkable. This church stands as a testament to faith. It overcame historical obstacles.
Budahegyvidéki Református Egyházközség was founded in 1931. At that time Budahegyvidék was newly populated. Early services were held in the Márvány Street school. The congregation purchased this building in 1935. It stands at the corner of Böszörményi Street and Beethoven Street.
Initially, the building was meant to be temporary. It had been built as a restaurant and bridge club named Claridge. The church planned to construct a proper temple. They even secured land for it in 1941. The location is where the MOM Cultural Center stands today.
Unfortunately, World War II and the communist era intervened. These events prevented the construction of a new church. They also hindered major renovations to the Böszörményi Street building. It was not until the 1980s that expansion ideas resurfaced. The congregation wanted to give the building a more church-like appearance.
In 1995, the first phase of reconstruction concluded. The most noticeable changes were the addition of a gallery. It also got a tower reminiscent of those in Transylvania. However, renovations at Budahegyvidéki Református Egyházközség are still ongoing.
Dr. Szabó István became the pastor in 1997. He later became bishop of the Danubian Reformed Church District in 2002. Under his guidance, the congregation grew significantly.
The Budahegyvidéki Református Egyházközség continues to thrive. Sunday services are central to community life. They start at 10 AM. Children’s services and a playroom are also available. Weekday services and Bible studies are held too.
Interestingly, the first service here was held in May 1935. László Szabolcska preached. He was the son of poet Mihály Szabolcska. In 2021, the church completed a new tower. The sanctuary was expanded. The children’s rooms were improved. A new pipe organ and a lift were installed. These additions greatly enhance community life at Budahegyvidéki Református Egyházközség.
