Observe how this towering structure defies convention. The Budafoki víztorony isn’t just a water tower. It’s a statement.

Welcome to the Budafoki víztorony one of Budapest’s most unique landmarks. It supplies water to the Tétényi plateau all the way to the Törley Champagne Factory. This modern marvel plays a vital role in the city’s water distribution network.

Completed in 2008 the Budafoki víztorony is Budapest’s youngest water tower. But it’s not just its age that sets it apart. The design is truly remarkable. In 2001 Fővárosi Vízművek announced a design competition which was won by Narthex Építészeti Kft..

Notice the asymmetrical kehely shape. The spheroid tank sits slightly offset. Four different sized consoles support the 3000 cubic meter tank. This gives the Budafoki víztorony its unique look. It is an architectural wonder. It also presented a significant engineering challenge. The execution required partial design plans at every stage.

Beneath the kehely pumps and water level controllers work constantly. These maintain the water level. When the water reaches 4 meters the pumps stop. Water then flows from the top down ensuring constant movement. This keeps the drinking water fresh. Usually it only contains 1500-2000 cubic meters of water.

The foundation is an impressive feat of engineering. It contains 1000 cubic meters of reinforced concrete. Its diameter is 30 meters. The water sits 38 meters high. The entire structure reaches 42 meters including the tank.

Budapest once had 16 public water towers. Today only three are still operating including this one. The Budafoki víztorony’s design is unique. Its sphere-shaped tank is slightly offset. Seen from below it looks like a giant hand holding it.

Construction began in the autumn of 2003. The Tétényi plateau is a protected area. Therefore the construction followed strict environmental regulations.

The Budafoki víztorony is officially named “Budafoki víztorony” although it stands on the northern border of the Baross Gábor housing estate, directly on the border of Kamaraerdő and Budatétény.

The area needed the Budafoki víztorony. It improves the region’s water supply. It solves pressure problems. It ensures a safe water supply for the future. The tower provides constant pressure to higher areas.

Fun fact the water primarily comes from the Csepel Island well system. The Budapest Waterworks also has wells in Halásztelek and Szigetcsép.

Imagine the views from the top. The Tétényi plateau stretches out before you. On a clear day you can see Gellért Hill Matthias Church the Megyeri Bridge and the surrounding mountains. Unfortunately we cannot visit the tank itself. Strict water safety regulations prevent access.

The Budafoki víztorony stands as a symbol of innovation and necessity. It represents the blend of form and function. It’s a modern marvel. It serves the community reliably every day. As you continue your journey remember this feat of engineering. Consider the hidden infrastructure that keeps our city running.
