Hidden amongst the rolling hills of Kraichgau lies the charming village of Büchig. A quiet haven, Büchig has a rich history intertwined with the larger town of Bretten. Büchig officially became a part of Bretten in 1974. But its story begins much earlier, a tale whispered through the rustling leaves of ancient beech trees. The first documented mention of Büchig appears in 1290. Two related documents, one from 1290 and another from 1296, mention a court in “Buche”. This court was granted as a fief to the brothers Heinrich and Johann, known as Wurme of Bretten, by Heinrich von Eberstein. The name “Büchig” itself echoes this history. Derived from the Old High German “buoh” or Middle High German “buoch,” the name translates to “beech forest” or “forest with tall trees.” Imagine Büchig centuries ago, a small farming community nestled away from major roads. The village relied heavily on agriculture. Today, only two full-time farmers remain, each managing between 80 and 120 hectares of land. Around ten other farms operate on a part-time basis, cultivating the remaining agricultural land. Büchig’s total area spans 430 hectares, including 80 hectares of forest. Over the years, especially during the 1960s and 70s, Büchig transformed. The decline of agriculture paved the way for its development into an attractive residential community. While embracing modern living, Büchig has retained its distinct village charm. The majority of Büchig’s residents are Catholic and belong to the “Heilig Kreuz” parish. This strong sense of community is reflected in the vibrant local events. From the “Kerwe” (church fair) to the Christmas market, there’s always something happening in Büchig. Even the village’s coat of arms tells a story. Adopted in 1911, the coat of arms features a horseshoe, a symbol found on old boundary stones. The colors, white and blue, represent the historical connection to the Bishopric of Speyer, which Büchig belonged to from the 15th century until 1803. Büchig may be a small village. But within its tranquil setting, a rich tapestry of history and community spirit thrives.
