What if these walls could speak? The Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church has seen a lot in its time. Its story began not far from here, at a humble railroad depot in 1913. Back then, it was just a small mission of the Westminster Presbyterian Church. The congregation, a small group of believers, held their first Sunday school meeting right there, amidst the hustle and bustle of arriving and departing trains. Imagine the scene: the steam, the sounds, the excitement of the journeys beginning and ending. By 1924, the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church had grown to 61 members strong. They had moved from the depot to a charming chapel on Penn Avenue, close to Cedar Lake Road. But it was the 1930s and 40s that saw the church truly flourish. Under the guidance of their beloved Pastor George H. Carey, membership swelled. Pastor Carey was a force of nature. He didn’t just lead services, he breathed life into the church. He spearheaded social groups, Bible studies, youth conferences, and even a youth theater group. It was his unwavering dedication that led to the construction of this very sanctuary where we stand today, right here on South Cedar Lake Road, in 1941.
