Nine thousand dollars. That’s all it cost to acquire the land that would become Bryant Square Park. But that was just the beginning of this park’s unique story. Bryant Square Park wasn’t simply plopped down. It was built up. Literally.

Bryant Square Park in Minneapolis sits on land that was twenty feet below street level. Imagine that. A significant challenge for a park in its infancy. The plan was straightforward enough. Purchase the low-lying land and then fill it. Simple. Except it wasn’t. Neighborhood groups attempted to fill the land themselves. They used it as a garbage dump. This approach proved somewhat less than ideal. Years passed. The land remained stubbornly low. Finally in 1912 after eight long years nearly six thousand dollars was spent on fill. The park could finally begin to take shape.

The park wasn’t always Bryant Square Park. Originally known as 8th Ward Park it received its current name in 1907. The name is a tribute to the poet William Cullen Bryant. Bryant Avenue was named after him which makes the name of the park very fitting. The park wasn’t just a place for passive recreation. From the start it was envisioned as a vibrant community hub. In 1914 Theodore Wirth the park superintendent proposed a plan to create one of the most compact and useful playgrounds in the entire Minneapolis park system. He even had cost estimates for the improvements. His vision included a recreation shelter. This vision however took some time to fully realize.

Alice Dietz a recreation instructor at the park in 1918 played a pivotal role in expanding recreation programs in the park. She later became a leader in the park board’s larger expansion of recreational opportunities. The 1920s saw significant improvements for Bryant Square Park. The construction of a recreation shelter designed by Harry Wild Jones cost only fifteen thousand dollars. The shelter stood proudly for forty-five years. It was eventually replaced by the current recreation center. This impressive building is now adorned with five mosaic panels showcasing seasonal themes. Each panel represents a unique piece of art. They reflect the collaboration of local artists and community members.

Bryant Square Park continues to evolve. The amphitheater the Bryant Square POPS provides a stage for community performances. In recent years the park has undergone renovations. New playgrounds wading pools and sports fields have been added. This demonstrates a continuing dedication to community recreation and enjoyment of this valuable green space. The story of Bryant Square Park is a testament to perseverance and community spirit. It’s more than just a park it’s a place built on a vision realized over many years. A beautiful testament to community effort.
