In this quiet corner of Grove Hall Park stands the Bryant and May War Memorial. A poignant reminder of sacrifice it is a tribute to the employees of Bryant and May who gave their lives in both World Wars.

The Bryant and May War Memorial isn’t just a stone monument. It’s a testament to a company’s commitment to its workers. Originally unveiled it commemorated those lost in the First World War. Later fourteen additional names were added to honor those who perished in the Second World War. The memorial initially stood at a different location Fairfield Sports Ground.

This octagonal structure features a stepped base and a cross. Sadly the original inscriptions are largely worn away. However through local archives the names of 65 employees lost in WWI have been recovered. The names of those lost in WWII remain a work in progress. One can still see the Bryant & May hologram on the shaft of the cross. A symbol of the company’s past and its acknowledgement of their losses.

Though time and the elements have weathered the stone a sense of solemnity remains. The memorial continues to stand proudly in Grove Hall Park. It is a fitting tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those it commemorates. A silent vigil for those who were never able to return home. The Bryant and May War Memorial reminds us of the human cost of conflict. It serves as a reminder to honour and never forget the sacrifices made.
