Why did Bruder-Klaus-Kirche become a symbol of peace? We’re standing before Bruder-Klaus-Kirche, a beacon of hope erected after the devastation of World War II. Consecrated in 1956, this church in the Petershausen district of Konstanz stands as a testament to resilience and reconciliation. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It embodies the spirit of Bruder Klaus, the church’s patron saint, a man who mediated a dispute between Konstanz and Thurgau in 1482. The very choice of Bruder Klaus as patron saint reflects the church’s dedication to peace. The simple, trapezoidal structure, crafted from reinforced concrete and painted white, speaks to the architectural trends of the 1950s. Notice the brownish-yellow clinker bricks at the base of the facade. Above, you’ll see a large sculpture depicting the Wedding at Cana, created by Emil Sutor, the same artist who designed the Bambi award. The six jugs symbolize everyday worries, transformed into grace and blessings through Christ. The 27 colored windows showcase visions of Bruder Klaus. Behind them lies a small chapel, separated by a glass wall. To the left stands the slender white bell tower, adorned with three rings and housing three bells and a clock. Inside, the altar cross, crafted by Willi Veit, depicts regional saints, including Bruder Klaus. A large relief by Oscar Steidle dominates the back wall, portraying Jesus Christ at his second coming. The 1960 Reiser organ, with its three manuals, 35 registers, and 2,402 pipes, fills the church with resounding music. Bruder-Klaus-Kirche serves not only as a place of worship but also as a reminder of the importance of peace and reconciliation.
