Feel the weight of history. You stand before the Brothers in Valor Sculpture. This isn’t just a monument. It’s a testament to courage and sacrifice.

The Brothers in Valor Sculpture honors four Japanese-American units. These brave soldiers fought for the US in World War II. Their stories are etched in bronze and marble. The sculpture stands tall. Four intertwined metal prongs reach towards the sky. Each prong represents a different unit. The base is polished black marble. It’s six feet tall. Bronze plaques tell the history of each group.

The 442nd Regimental Combat Team is one. They earned the title of the most decorated unit of its size and time. Their battle cry was “Go For Broke”. The 100th Infantry Battalion is another. They were nicknamed the “Purple Heart Battalion”. This was because of the number of casualties they suffered. The Military Intelligence Service also served. They performed vital but secret intelligence work. Lastly there’s the 1399th Engineer Construction Battalion. They completed essential defense projects.

This memorial wasn’t built overnight. It was conceived by University of Hawaii professor Judy M Weightman. She interviewed soldiers who had helped liberate concentration camps. She wanted to honor their bravery. The sculpture itself was created by Bumpei Akaji. He was a 442nd veteran and a talented sculptor. He studied art in Italy and received a Master of Fine Arts degree. The sculpture was dedicated on July 4 1998. It sits on a 5100 square foot site. A time capsule is within the base. It holds the names of those who died and the names of those who helped create the memorial.

Look closely. Imagine the faces of these soldiers. Feel their strength. Feel their sacrifice. The Brothers in Valor Sculpture is more than just a sight to see. It is a place to reflect and remember. It is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made for freedom. It honors the courage and service of these incredible men. These “Brothers in Valor” left an enduring legacy. Their stories must be heard. Remember them.
