“What singular act of love and mercy brought about this house of worship?” That’s the question that Mother Mary Akpan pondered. Here we stand before the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star. It’s a beacon of faith and fellowship right here in London.
Let’s delve into the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star’s story. Its roots trace back to 1974. Mother Mary Akpan journeyed from London to Calabar in Nigeria. Her daughter was ill. Medical interventions had failed. In Calabar, she met Leader Olumba Olumba Obu. He pronounced healing upon her daughter.
Filled with gratitude, Mother Mary returned to London. She vowed to share the works of The Father. She wanted to spread the Kingdom’s message to the people of Britain. Initially, the group met in a brother’s house in South London. They later worshipped in Kennington. In 1978, they found a permanent home in a former Methodist church. It was in Mill Hill Village in North London. This became Mill Hill Bethel.
The Brotherhood of the Cross and Star formally registered as a charity in March 1976. As the community grew, a second worship place opened in 1985. It was in a former Welsh Presbyterian chapel. This was at Falmouth Road, off Old Kent Road near Elephant and Castle. Today, it serves as the administrative headquarters of BCS UK. It’s known as Elephant and Castle Bethel.
Later, the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star expanded. They acquired premises in Moss Side, Manchester in 1990. It serves members in the North of England.
Leader Olumba Olumba Obu is the founder. He received no formal education. He never attended any church. Yet, he became known for His teachings’ potency and wisdom. At his birth in Biakpan, Nigeria, a blind woman received her sight just by holding Him. When only three, He said, “I am the Universal Teacher”.
The Brotherhood of the Cross and Star has many events. They celebrate their Golden Jubilee in July 2025. It will mark 50 years of spiritual growth in the UK. They reflect on their journey. They honour their achievements. They look forward to a bright future. They will remain under the guidance of Leader Olumba Olumba Obu.
The Brotherhood of the Cross and Star also observes Anger Free Day. They celebrate the Power of Love in February. They have an Easter Week celebration in April. Other events include the Coronation Of the King of Kings Anniversary. They also celebrate Supreme Signature Day. The Baya Peace March takes place in Cross River State.
Today, the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star continues to spread its message. It is about love, unity, and service. It all began with a mother’s gratitude. It is a testament to the power of faith and community.
