The original post office nestled near the Papakura Stream, a brook that gave Brookby its distinctive name. Brookby is more than just a name, though. It’s a vibrant rural settlement south of Auckland, about 5 kilometers west of Clevedon and the same distance southeast of Whitford. Brookby started as a small farming community. Today, it’s a growing area with new houses popping up, evidence of its increasing popularity. Within Brookby stands Meadowbrook, a testament to the area’s history. Built in 1880 by a Mr. Lord, Meadowbrook is the oldest surviving home. This grand old house, constructed from locally milled kauri, even features a remarkable 26-meter deep well. Another important landmark is the Brookby Unsectarian Church, built in 1878. It served as the heart of the Brookby community. Inside, a memorial stone honors John and Leah Embling, early settlers who arrived in 1854. Brookby also boasts its own school, Brookby School, established in 1875. This coeducational primary school, catering to years 1 through 8, currently has a roll of 124 students. From a small settlement named after a brook to a thriving community with a rich history, Brookby offers a charming glimpse into rural New Zealand.
