“Ain’t fancy but we’re damn sure country.” That’s the motto of the Broken Spoke. It is a saying by the late James White. Today we stand before the Broken Spoke Plaque. This plaque marks a significant moment in the history of this beloved Austin institution.

The Broken Spoke is more than just a dance hall. It is a living legend. It embodies the spirit of Texas. The Broken Spoke officially became a historical landmark on April 12, 2023. This date was also James White’s birthday. The unveiling of the Texas Historical Marker was a momentous occasion.

The Broken Spoke’s story began in 1964. James White and his stepfather, Joe Baland, built it. James White spotted a vacant property. It was on South Lamar with signature oak trees. Despite limited funds, they built the original front room. Today this serves as the restaurant.

A year later, they added the dancehall. It had a ceiling so low some performers could not stand straight. Much of the Broken Spoke was built with community help. Beers were a nickel when it opened. Hard alcohol wasn’t served until 1980 because they couldn’t afford a license.

The Broken Spoke quickly became iconic. James White booked local names and legends. He even booked up-and-comers. These musicians helped define country music. Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys played here. A clean-cut Willie Nelson first played here in 1967. George Strait played here once a month from 1975 to 1982.

Even Mick Jagger visited The Broken Spoke in 2021. This shows how important it is as an Austin landmark. James White passed away in 2021. His family continues to operate the business.

Ginny Peacock is James White’s daughter. She spoke at the dedication. “You’re looking at the real Texas right now” she said. “People make a pilgrimage just to come here. There isn’t anything like this where they live.”

Bob Ward is a Travis County Historical Commissioner. He also spoke. “The Broken Spoke is what you think of when you think about Texas” he said. “If you want to experience Texas, you come to The Broken Spoke.”

Alvin Crow played songs on the front porch during the historical marker unveiling. Many people gathered to see the event. Some even came on horseback.

The Broken Spoke stands as a reminder of old Austin. It is surrounded by modern developments. The Whites made a promise to Ernest Tubb years ago. They are “keepin’ it country.”

The Broken Spoke offers dance lessons. Terri White teaches them Wednesday through Saturday nights. Live music fills the restaurant area. There is no cover charge. Live music also fills the dancehall area. There is a cover charge.

So, as you stand before this plaque. Remember the history. Remember the music. Remember James White’s words. The Broken Spoke is not just a place. It is an experience. It is a piece of Texas history. It is “damn sure country”.
