From the shores of Lake Washington, a hush falls over the crowd as a golfer approaches the 18th hole at Broadmoor Golf Course. It’s August 2015, and Seattle native Fred Couples is about to make history. Broadmoor Golf Course isn’t just any golf course. Established in 1924 and opening for play in 1927, it’s a private club nestled in the Broadmoor neighborhood, south of the University of Washington. This course, designed by A. Vernon “Mac” Macan, a prominent architect of his time, is a classic parkland style. Douglas firs line the fairways, offering glimpses of Lake Washington, the Cascades, and the city skyline. Broadmoor has seen its share of legendary moments. In 1945, Byron Nelson set a world record here, winning the Seattle Open with an astounding 259 for 72 holes. The course has also hosted the likes of Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, and even Jack Nicklaus, who won the Seattle Open here in 1962 during the World’s Fair. But back to 2015. Couples sinks his eagle putt, the crowd erupts, and a new course record is set: a 59, eleven under par. Broadmoor Golf Course, a place where history is made, and memories are etched into the landscape.
