The Royal British Legion’s story began on May 15 1921. Four organizations united. They were the Comrades of the Great War and the National Association of Discharged Sailors and Soldiers. Also included were the National Federation of Discharged and Demobilised Sailors and Soldiers. The fundraising department of the Officers’ Association joined too.
Field Marshal The 1st Earl Haig played a crucial role. He was a founder and president until his death in 1928. The Legion received a royal charter in 1925. Royal patronage proved invaluable.
Service in the armed forces is not required for membership anymore. The Legion has an official magazine called Legion. It is free to all members.
The Royal British Legion is best known for the Poppy Appeal. This happens every year before Remembrance Sunday. People wear red poppies to remember those who served.
