“A hundred pounds a week!” exclaimed a passerby, shaking his head in disbelief. “And for what? A bottomless pit!” That, my friends, is how people used to talk about Brighton’s Original Well. Can you imagine? This unassuming spot was once a source of both anxiety and exhilaration. You see, in 1858, the Brighton Corporation decided to build a school out in Woodingdean. They needed water, but instead of paying for a connection to the waterworks, they chose to dig a well. They thought it would be a simple, cost-effective solution. Little did they know they were embarking on a four-year odyssey! They started digging, expecting to hit water quickly. Weeks turned into months, and the hole just kept getting deeper. The well shaft stretched down, lined with bricks, a testament to the backbreaking work of 45 men. It became a bit of a local joke, this “monster” devouring money and yielding nothing. Finally, in March 1862, the exhausted workers heard it. A “rushing, rumbling sound” signaling the presence of water. After four long years and a hefty sum of money, they had reached a staggering 1,285 feet, making it the deepest hand-dug well in the world. The news spread through Brighton like wildfire. Church bells rang, people cheered, and even a vial of the well’s first water was preserved. Ironically, the well only served the school for four years before being replaced by a more convenient mains supply. Yet, Brighton’s Original Well remains. A silent monument to Victorian determination and a stark reminder that sometimes, the most extraordinary stories lie hidden beneath our feet.
