Brilliant achievements mark Brighton Grammar School’s story. Founded in 1882, Brighton Grammar School began with a mere eight students. George Henry Crowther started it all.
Brighton Grammar School’s history is rich. The school quickly grew. By 1890, 160 boys attended Brighton Grammar School. Economic hardship caused a decline in the 1890s.
Brighton Grammar School moved locations several times. Its first location was on New Street. Then it moved to Temperley Lodge. Finally, Brighton Grammar School settled on Outer Crescent.
Crowther Oval sits at the heart of Brighton Grammar School. Old Boy engineers helped construct it. They used “4000 loads of filling”.
George Henry Crowther led Brighton Grammar School until his death in 1918. His son, Harry Arnold A. Crowther, then took over.
Herbert E. Dixon became headmaster in 1924. He saved Brighton Grammar School from bankruptcy. The Church of England helped. In 1927, the Quadrangle opened.
Geoffrey G. Green’s tenure was cut short by illness. Reverend Phillip St. John Wilson followed. Brighton Grammar School joined the Associated Public Schools of Victoria in 1958. Wilson House was built to accommodate growing numbers.
Robert Lancelot Rofe led Brighton Grammar School from 1967 to 1995. He oversaw significant expansion. New buildings included the Clive Crosby building and the R. L. Rofe Creative Arts Centre.
Michael Spencer Urwin modernized Brighton Grammar School starting in 1996. He implemented curriculum reviews. He established a pastoral care system.
Ross P. Featherston became headmaster in 2014. He has overseen extensive redevelopment. The Urwin Centre for Learning opened.
Brighton Grammar School celebrated its 140th anniversary in 2022. Student numbers reached 1500 in 2023. Fairweather and Melville Houses were introduced.
Brighton Grammar School has a sister school relationship with Firbank Grammar School. They participate in co-educational activities. The school also maintains a close relationship with St Andrew’s Anglican Church.
Brighton Grammar School operates the Crowther Centre for Learning and Innovation. This center supports the educational community. It improves decision-making processes.
Brighton Grammar School has a house system. Houses include Armstrong, Crowther, Dixon, Fairweather, Hancock, Melville, Rofe and School. Each house has its own unique character.
Brighton Grammar School offers the Victorian Certificate of Education. Its students participate in various sports. These include football and rowing. Brighton Grammar School has won many APS premierships.
Brighton Grammar School participates in the Formula 1 in Schools challenge. Students also participate in the iDesign program. Brighton Grammar School has a rich music program. It includes orchestras and choirs.
Brighton Grammar School has produced many notable alumni. They include Doug Warbrick, co-founder of Rip Curl, and Andrew Bassat, co-founder of SEEK. Charlie Pickering, a comedian, is also an alumnus. Dylan Alcott, a Paralympian, attended Brighton Grammar School.
