Dare to imagine a pioneer’s spirit soaring high above the Andes. That man was Brigadier General Don Ángel María Zuloaga. This memorial honors his remarkable life. He was not just a military man. He was a visionary.

Ángel María Zuloaga was born in Mendoza in 1885. He dedicated his life to aviation. Zuloaga’s career began at the Colegio Militar de la Nación. He graduated as a sub-lieutenant of Artillery in 1907.

Let’s journey back to 1916. Zuloaga and Eduardo Bradley achieved an incredible feat. They completed the first balloon crossing of the Andes Mountains. Imagine the cold. They faced temperatures of 33°C below zero. Their balloon soared to 8,100 meters. This daring flight from Santiago, Chile, to Uspallata, Argentina, made them heroes. The Argentine government recognized Zuloaga’s achievement. He received the title of Military Aviator. He also received a special gold pilot emblem.

Zuloaga’s career continued to ascend. He served as a military attaché in France. There, he earned a French Military Aviator brevet in 1919. Returning to Argentina he directed the Military Aviation School in 1925. He served as a military attaché in the United States from 1926 to 1930. Later, he became Director General of Aeronautics. During his tenure, he boosted the construction of national aircraft. He also created the Los Tamarindos Military Air Base. It is now known as El Plumerillo Air Base.

Brigadier General Don Ángel María Zuloaga’s influence extended beyond his military roles. He was the first military aviator to reach the rank of Brigade General in 1940. He was also the commander of the Army Aviation. Zuloaga later joined the Argentine Air Force. He retired as a Brigadier General.

Did you know that Zuloaga was admired by Apollo 11 astronauts? Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins visited him in 1969. Armstrong was a fan of Zuloaga. He was inspired by his life and career. The astronauts even took home souvenirs. They took the cups and saucers with the logo of Zuloaga’s balloon.

Zuloaga passed away in Buenos Aires in 1975. His legacy lives on through his contributions to aviation. A plaza in Morón and a school in Entre Ríos bear his name. He left behind numerous published works. These include “History of Argentine Aviation”. He also penned “Air Warfare”.

Consider Ángel María Zuloaga. He was more than a military figure. He was a pioneer. He pushed the boundaries of aviation. He inspires generations to reach for the skies. This memorial on Florida Street serves as a reminder. It honors his enduring impact on Argentina and the world.
