Journey back to the early 1990s. That was when Brickfields Meadow transformed from a brickworks into the green space we see today. This land, now a haven, has a history beneath its grassy surface.

Brickfields Meadow is a 4.37-hectare meadow. It sits in Woodside, a part of the London Borough of Croydon. It’s not widely known because its entrance on Tennison Road is quite secluded. You’ll find it just beyond an EDF Energy transformer.

Imagine this place bustling with industry. Before becoming Brickfields Meadow, it was the Woodside brickworks. The Council gained control of the site through planning agreements. This happened in two phases over two years.

Walk with me, and let’s explore what Brickfields Meadow offers today. There is a large pond where you are allowed to fish. A dipping platform lets you get closer to the water’s edge. The Buddleia Valley bursts with color. Grassland and woodland planting provide varied habitats. A small woodland area offers a shady escape. And for the young ones, a children’s play area awaits. It even features a mini maze and a roundabout.

It’s worth noting that Brickfields Meadow isn’t always perfectly maintained. Sadly, some rubbish can be found around the deep pond. The water within often appears cloudy and brown.

But don’t let that deter you. A dedicated community group has formed. They are working hard to maintain Brickfields Meadow. They are also raising funds to improve it. Their efforts are helping to keep this space enjoyable for everyone.
