“A hundred thousand welcomes” Vincent Hayes always said. That’s the spirit you feel at Brick Lane Music Hall. It’s not actually on Brick Lane anymore. It’s in Silvertown now. Housed in a beautifully restored former church. St Mark’s Church to be precise.
Brick Lane Music Hall is more than just a venue. It’s a living testament to the enduring magic of British music hall. Vincent Hayes’ dream started in a Bethnal Green pub. The Lord Hood. He transformed its back room into a tiny stage. Beer crates formed the makeshift platform. Soon the pub overflowed with music hall enthusiasts. Even Shadow Cabinet members attended.
Then came the big move. In 1992 Brick Lane Music Hall opened in its new home. A former workers’ canteen in Truman’s Brewery. Food and drink were central to the experience. Recreating the atmosphere of the old music halls. Alcohol was banned in those halls in the 1920s. This affected their popularity. Vincent believed good food and drink created the right mood. Matinee shows offered afternoon tea. Evening shows included dinner.
Danny La Rue supported the fledgling hall. His appearance boosted its reputation. Stars like Barbara Windsor graced its stage. She even met the EastEnders producer there. What a story!
The move to Silvertown saw Brick Lane Music Hall take up residence in St Mark’s Church. A remarkable Victorian gothic building. Initially it suffered from neglect. Vandalism and even a fire threatened its existence. Pigeon droppings saved the day. Their accumulation extinguished the fire.
The church was restored. Brick Lane Music Hall transformed the interior. It added a box office a bar seating and a stage. A professional kitchen and dressing rooms complete the venue. English Heritage recognised the sensitive restoration. They upgraded St Mark’s to a Grade II* listing.
Today Brick Lane Music Hall continues to thrive. Vincent Hayes often hosts shows. He’s joined by performers from The Lord Hood days and new talent. The unique atmosphere continues to draw people in.
