Truman’s Brewery a name whispered through London’s history. Here we stand before its legendary legacy.

Founded around 1666 the original brewhouse began as the Black Eagle Brewery. It wasn’t always Truman’s. Joseph Truman took control in the 1680s. He transformed a modest operation into a brewing powerhouse.

Under Benjamin Truman’s shrewd management Truman’s boomed. Demand for porter fueled its expansion. It became one of London’s largest brewers. A funny story involves the Prince of Wales. He ordered beer for a celebration. The first batch was deemed inferior. The mob reacted by throwing beer and barrels into the fire. The Prince ordered a second batch. This time from Truman’s. The people were satisfied.

Porter’s mass production transformed the brewing industry. Benjamin Truman invested wisely increasing brewing capacity. By 1760 Truman’s was London’s third-largest porter brewer. He left no male heir. His grandsons and his head clerk James Grant inherited the brewery. Sampson Hanbury later took the reins.

Hanbury modernized the brewery. He introduced a steam engine boosting production and distribution. He demanded high-quality ingredients. Porter production doubled from 100000 to 200000 barrels annually. His nephew Thomas Fowell Buxton joined. Buxton was a social reformer. He improved working conditions. He even employed a schoolmaster to teach his employees to read and write. No one was dismissed.

Buxton hosted a famous Cabinet Dinner in 1831. Twenty-three cabinet members dined at the brewery. Lord Brougham suggested beef steaks and porter. The meal was cooked on the brewery boiler house furnace. Truman’s exported beer widely. They supplied the East India Company and the British Army.

The arrival of the railway in 1839 changed everything. Pale ale’s popularity surpassed porter. Truman’s acquired Phillips Brewery in Burton becoming the world’s largest brewer. The Burton brewery struggled initially. But by 1880 it was profitable. Financial difficulties and restrictive licensing laws challenged Truman’s. Modernizing the brewery created more financial strain.

Truman’s became a public limited company in 1888. The brewery continued to grow. It expanded its pub estate and bought suppliers. It invested in motorized vehicles ending the era of its famous draymen. The 20th century brought new challenges. Competition from imported lagers and mergers threatened its independence. Truman’s survived by restructuring and modernizing. It became London’s last major independent brewery.

In 1971 a bidding war ensued. Grand Metropolitan acquired Truman’s. They made changes that ultimately harmed the company. The brewery closed in 1989.

The Truman’s brand was revived in 2010. A new brewery opened in Hackney Wick in 2013. Truman’s beer flows again in East London. The story of Truman’s Brewery a tale of ambition innovation and resilience. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of London’s brewing heritage.
