Beyond the broken windows and crumbling walls of the Brewery, whispers of Minneapolis’s brewing past still linger. The Brewery, now just a shell of its former glory, stands as a testament to a time when beer flowed like the Mississippi. The Minneapolis Brewing Company, originally the Minneapolis Brewing and Malting Company, began as a fusion of four brewing giants: the John Orth Brewing Company, the Heinrich Brewing Association, the Frederick D. Norenberg Brewery, and the Germania Brewing Association. In 1890, these titans of the brewing world united, primarily operating out of John Orth’s expansive facility. A grand new brewery arose on this very spot in 1892, a striking blend of four architectural styles, each honoring one of the original breweries. Over the next decade, expansions transformed the Brewery into one of the nation’s largest. The company officially became the Minneapolis Brewing Company in 1893. They launched a new line of beers under the Golden Grain Belt Beer trademark. By 1905, the Brewery was practically a self-contained city, boasting a cooperage, carpentry shop, machine shop, wagon shop, paint shop, and even a livery. The Brewery thrived until Prohibition, when it adapted to produce near-beer, malt syrup, and soft drinks. After Prohibition’s repeal, the beloved Grain Belt, “the Friendly Beer,” returned, much to the joy of the Twin Cities. The Brewery experienced a resurgence, reaching the top 20 breweries by 1970. Sadly, mounting competition led to its closure in 1976. The city of Minneapolis acquired the Brewery building in 1987, saving it from demolition. It stands today, a poignant ruin, a reminder of Minnesota’s rich brewing heritage. The Brewery’s decaying walls echo with stories of mergers, expansions, Prohibition struggles, and eventual decline. It’s a story of ambition, innovation, and ultimately, the bittersweet taste of change.
