A long leasehold apartment. That’s how the auctioneer described Flat 34 Brewers Buildings. But Brewers Buildings is so much more than just apartments.

Standing before you are these impressive buildings. They are a testament to 19th-century philanthropy. The Brewers Company built them. They were built for workers in the area. The buildings are a surviving example of several similar blocks. These were constructed in the 1870s and 80s. Each block has a unique completion date. These are shown on heraldic plaques. The dates are 1871 1876 and 1882.

Three different firms built these blocks. William Cubitt & Co Ebenezer Lawrance and B E Nightingale were responsible. The architect was probably Edward B Martineau. He was the Surveyor to the Company. He designed these in a brick Gothic style. The buildings blend stocks with yellow and red dressings.

Although the flats were small they included a luxury. This was a private toilet. A very modern amenity for that time. The flat roofs also have shared patio gardens. This isn’t readily apparent from the street. The Brewers Company crests are prominent. They are above each entrance. Even though they were social housing they have a grand feel.

The land was originally acquired by Alice Owen. She was a thrice-married lady. In 1598 she used her wealth. She bought farmland for a hospital for poor widows. She vested the rest of the land in the Brewers Company. This was likely due to her first husband. He was a member of the Company. The location was possibly chosen due to a local legend. She supposedly escaped death by an arrow. This happened while playing in the Islington fields.

The Brewers Company still owns much of the surrounding land. Dame Alice Owen’s Foundation donates to charity. They make annual donations of around 700000 pounds. This comes from the land’s income. Brewers Buildings remains a fine example of the Company’s legacy. Today Islington Council manages this Grade II listed block. Its story is a blend of history philanthropy and enduring architecture. It’s a building with a rich and fascinating past. A past that continues to shape this vibrant corner of Clerkenwell.
