Gaze upon this majestic figure. This is the Brest statue one of eight at the Place de la Concorde. It stands proudly a testament to a city far from Paris yet deeply connected to its history.

The Place de la Concorde is Paris’ largest square. Designed by Ange-Jacques Gabriel it was meant to glorify King Louis XV. Ironically Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette met their tragic ends here. Their execution took place near this very statue. A plaque marks the spot.

Each of these statues represents a French provincial capital. This one Brest. They were added later in 1836. That was after the square underwent a transformation. The original statue of Louis XV was destroyed during the revolution. The square itself changed names several times reflecting France’s tumultuous past. It was once called Place Louis XV then Place de la Revolution and finally Place de la Concorde.

The Brest statue like its companions was part of a grand redesign. This was overseen by Jacques Ignace Hittorff. Hittorff also designed the square’s stunning fountains and lampposts. The eight statues provide a sense of unity. They represent the connection between the capital and the provinces.

The Brest statue stands as a silent witness to Parisian history. It speaks of revolutions and executions. It speaks of the artistry of Gabriel and Hittorff. It also speaks of the enduring strength of French cities like Brest.

So stand here. Absorb the story the statue tells. Feel the weight of history beneath your feet. Remember the lives lost and the city it represents. The Brest statue is more than just a monument. It’s a portal to the heart of Paris’ past.
