Did you ever wonder about a place where whispers of the spirit world echo through the walls? That place is Brentwood Spiritualist Church. Let’s uncover its story right here on Primrose Hill.

Brentwood Spiritualist Church has a unique origin. It began in 1942. Mrs Margaret Temple Cox, Mr Tom and Mrs Gladys Kenner founded it. They were assisted by Mr Claude Ridge, Horace Pacey and Helen Slaughter. Early services took place in Mrs Temple Cox’s home. Later, they moved to a disused shop on Crescent Road. A hut on Shenfield Common and the local Conservative Club also served as temporary locations.

During those early days, a clairvoyant made a prediction. They said the church would have a permanent home. It would be on a hill in a garden. A large tree would nestle nearby. Also, Mr Kenner would be the Manager.

After the war in 1945, things began to change. Mr Kenner said they were led by Spirit to Primrose Hill. There, they found some large Army huts in a nice garden. These huts had been a Nursery School and then used by ARP. Now vacant, they rented them for £1 per week. Finally, they had a home. Better times were on their way.

These premises were originally further down the hill. They were later moved to their present location. The Greater Metropolitan Spiritualist Association provided help. They gave mediums, collapsible chairs, a piano and other items. Claude Ridge built the platform.

Fundraising events filled the early years. In 1955, they bought the property. The dedication of volunteers, Church Trustees and the Committee kept it running. Many improvements were made over the years. In 2005, they completed disabled access and facilities.

Today, Brentwood Spiritualist Church continues to offer services. They hold healing sessions every Wednesday morning. Divine Services take place on Sunday evenings. Wednesday evenings feature clairvoyance events. All are welcome to attend. Check their Facebook page for updates.
