Breites Wasser

Gazing across Breites Wasser, can you envision it choked with mud? Just over a decade ago, this serene lake was almost lost. Breites Wasser, or “Wide Water,” is a tranquil lake nestled in the heart of the Teufelsmoor, a vast lowland area near Osterholz-Scharmbeck in Lower Saxony, Germany. It’s a place where the Beek and Hamme rivers meet, creating a constantly shifting watery landscape. Breites Wasser is not just a lake. It’s a vital part of a wetland triangle, formed by the rivers’ many oxbow lakes and small, irregular ponds with marshy banks. These ponds, known locally as “Blänken,” add to the ever-changing scenery, responding to the ebb and flow of the water levels. In 2008, Breites Wasser faced a crisis. Years of accumulating sediment threatened to turn this beautiful lake into a swamp. As part of the Hammeniederung project, an ambitious restoration effort was launched. Over 7,000 tons of sludge were dredged from the lake and its side arms. This muddy treasure was then transported to sand pits near Wallhöfen. Breites Wasser was reborn. This crucial intervention preserved the lake’s unique ecosystem, a haven for a rich variety of birdlife. Today, Breites Wasser is a paradise for birdwatchers. Numerous rare bird species breed here. It’s also a stopover point for migrating birds in spring and autumn, and a bustling colony of gulls calls this area home. Several walking paths around the lake invite you to explore this unique environment, to witness the results of the restoration, and to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Teufelsmoor.
