In 1915, as the world was embroiled in war, a unique housing project began to rise in Bremen. This was no ordinary housing project. This was the Breitenbachhof. Breitenbachhof was designed by the architect Rudolf Jacobs. It was a response to a critical housing shortage, particularly for railway workers. These workers, often transferred, needed flexible housing arrangements. The Eisenbahn-Spar- und Bauverein (Espabau), founded by railway employees in 1883, commissioned the project. They wanted something distinct from the typical tenement-style housing common in other large cities. Jacobs delivered a design that broke with conventional architectural styles. The Breitenbachhof, completed in 1919, consisted of two- to three-story buildings grouped around two large courtyards, providing 162 apartments. Later, 20 more apartments were added in the attics, creating the distinctive mansard roofs you see today. Originally, Breitenbachhof housed only railway workers. You would have found shunters, signalmen, engine drivers, and conductors living here. Today, the community is more diverse. But the legacy of its unique architectural design, born from a specific social need during a time of global conflict, persists. The Breitenbachhof stands today as a testament to both its unique past and its vibrant present. This building, with its large inner courtyards and distinctive mansard roofs, is a landmark in the Gröpelingen district. It stands as a reminder of a time when providing quality housing for essential workers was paramount, even amidst a world war.
