Tucked away in Chicago’s Avondale neighborhood, Brandt Park has a rich history. It’s more than just swings and playing fields. Brandt Park whispers tales of community gatherings and German-American heritage. The park, spanning almost six acres, takes its name from the German-American Brands family. They owned the land long before it officially became a park in the 1920s. For years, this very spot was a popular picnic grove. It hosted gatherings of groups like the Clan-na-gael, the Schwabenverein, and even “old settlers’ picnics.” Imagine the laughter and music echoing through the trees. The park officially opened in the 1920s. However, the community’s desire for a park here started much earlier. Shortly after the River Park District formed in 1917, Avondale residents petitioned to purchase the Brands Picnic Grove. Negotiations were tough. The River Park District finally acquired the land in 1927. A year later, improvements began, transforming the picnic grove into a recreational haven. Brandt Park boasted a playground, basketball, horseshoe and tennis courts, and an athletic field that doubled as an ice-skating rink in winter. All this nestled within a picturesque landscape of trees and lawns. An existing building was adapted for use as a fieldhouse. The park’s transformation continued when the Chicago Park District took over in 1934. Architect Clarence Hatzfeld remodeled the fieldhouse. He added club rooms, game rooms, shower facilities, a workshop, and a community hall. The old brick fieldhouse eventually deteriorated. It was demolished in the mid-1970s. A larger, modern fieldhouse rose in its place. The surrounding landscape also got a redesign. Over the years, Brandt Park has seen ongoing improvements. The playground has been updated, the tennis courts resurfaced, and the plantings refreshed. Brandt Park continues to be a vibrant community hub. It offers a variety of programs from early childhood recreation to basketball. After-school activities range from Cubs Care Baseball and Teen Club to table tennis, indoor soccer, and Mightyfitkidz. In the summer, the park hosts day camps. Children enjoy the playground and green space. Brandt Park stands as a testament to its history. It’s a place where community thrives amidst the echoes of picnics past.
