Opened in June 1952 by Wilfred Pickles, Brandlehow Primary School stands as a testament to innovative design. It also has a rich history woven into the very fabric of Putney. Let’s explore what makes this school so special.

Brandlehow Primary School is more than just a place of learning. It is a Grade II listed building. The school embodies architectural significance and community spirit.

Ernő Goldfinger designed the existing building. It was built in 1950. Goldfinger was an architect known for his modernist designs. His vision for Brandlehow Primary School was revolutionary. He used a prefabricated reinforced concrete-frame system. This method needed half the steel of standard steel-framed buildings. Goldfinger’s innovative approach made the school a landmark of its time.

The L-shaped layout of Brandlehow Primary School surrounds the playground. It features red brick infills. A single-story structure includes a taller assembly hall. This hall has full-height windows that look into the playground. Classrooms line the north side. A brick tower marks the entrance to the school. These elements create a unique educational environment.

Even the school’s location tells a story. Brandlehow Primary School is located on Brandlehow Road in Putney. It sits south of Wandsworth Park and north of the railway line. This connects Putney station and Wandsworth town station.

The site has seen its share of historical events. Before Goldfinger’s design, the original Brandlehow Road School opened in February 1902. This three-story building suffered damage during World War Two. Bombing caused extensive damage in 1945. Some buildings were beyond repair.

Over the years, Brandlehow Primary School has evolved. In the 1960s, Goldfinger designed an extension. Unlike the original building, it wasn’t prefabricated. It also had less glazing. In 2005, team 51.5° architects added another extension. This new building used prefabricated techniques and opened in 2006. It included a new wooden playground.

Not all changes were smooth. In 2007, the original Goldfinger-designed school keeper’s cottage was illegally demolished. Developer Rajiv Laxman was fined for this act. The cottage was later restored in 2013. This was part of a residential project.

Today, Brandlehow Primary School continues to serve its community. It accommodates children aged 3 to 11. The school has a capacity of 350 pupils. Currently, it has 361 students. The school maintains a good rating. Ofsted has rated it as “Good”. It applies to the quality of education, behaviour, attitudes, leadership and management.

Brandlehow Primary School is a place of learning. It is a living piece of architectural history. It reflects Putney’s resilience and innovation. As you stand here, consider the many stories this school holds within its walls.
