“Strokes, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s.” These are not just words. They are challenges tackled head-on within these walls. Welcome to the Brain & Spine Institute.

The Brain & Spine Institute is more than just a building. It’s a beacon of hope. It stands as a testament to human ingenuity. It embodies our relentless pursuit of understanding and curing diseases of the nervous system.

Located in the Pitié-Salpêtrière University Hospital, the Brain & Spine Institute is at the heart of where neurology was born. This location fosters collaboration. Scientists, caregivers, engineers, and patients work together. They share one ambition. They want to prevent, repair, and cure diseases of the brain and spinal cord.

The Brain & Spine Institute’s story began with an ambitious vision. It was envisioned as a unique site. Here, major pathologies of the brain and spinal cord would be studied and treated. This ambitious project needed the best talents from the public and private sectors. The goal was to maximize benefits for patients.

The Brain & Spine Institute brings together about 500 researchers, clinicians, engineers, technicians, and administrative staff. Post-docs and PhD students also contribute. They work at the research center. The center is part of NeurATRIS. This is the French part of EATRIS.

Designed by architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, the building itself is a marvel. Its glass and light-filled structure resembles an H. This optimizes spatial organization. Flexible infrastructures adapt to research groups’ needs. Communication is facilitated on and between floors. The glass walls reinforce openness.

The Brain & Spine Institute spans eight floors and two basements. It covers 22,000 square meters. Inside, you will find zones for discussion, research, consultations, and teaching. The meeting place showcases the Institute’s activities. It provides access to laboratories, conference rooms, and the clinic.

Research laboratories occupy 11,000 square meters. They are organized around the building’s central part. This central area houses technology platforms open to everyone. Clinical research space includes the Center for Clinical Investigations and the neuroimaging platform. There is also space for industrial partners and start-up companies.

The Brain & Spine Institute focuses on understanding the mechanisms of neuronal death in neurodegenerative diseases. They study predictive biomarkers and mechanisms of neuroprotection. The institute also researches the repair of nerve tissue, determinism, and the triggering of epileptic seizures. They even study brain mechanisms of mood and motivation disorders. Each issue is addressed through a disease model. Then, it is applied to other diseases of the nervous system.

The Paris Brain Institute, or ICM, is the largest neuroscience institute in France. It gathers basic scientists, clinicians, and industrial partners. The ICM hosts a research neuroimaging platform called Centre de NeuroImagerie de Recherche. This center is equipped with advanced imaging facilities.

The Brain & Spine Institute fosters interactions and dialogue. It creates a stimulating scientific environment. It optimizes resources allocated to research. This creates an internationally recognized pole of excellence in the neurosciences. It reduces the time needed to translate research results into clinical applications.

So, as you stand before the Brain & Spine Institute, remember it is more than a building. It is a place of collaboration. It’s a hub of innovation. It’s a testament to the power of the human spirit in the face of neurological challenges.
