A century ago cine film captured Bow Road Methodist Church. This church stands before you a testament to resilience. The Bow Mission began in 1860. Reverend Alexander MacAulay and his family arrived in Bow. They lived at 13 Tredeager Square. The Bow Mission’s work continued even after the devastation of World War II. Bombing raids in September 1941 destroyed the original building. A direct hit reduced it to rubble. The old school hall miraculously survived. It became the temporary home of the congregation. Imagine the services held there. The hymns echoing in the damaged walls. War reparations and community fundraising made a new building possible. On September 8 1951 a new Bow Road Methodist Church opened its doors. It stands on the foundations of the old church. Architect Alick Gavin designed the Modernist style brick building. The church continues to serve the community today. It is a place of worship and a hub of activity. Friday evenings see the Food Cycle project. They provide vegetarian meals for those in need. Volunteers help serve food and provide companionship. The Bow Road Methodist Church’s story is one of faith perseverance and community spirit. A story etched in brick film and the memories of generations. It is a living legacy. A beacon of hope in the heart of Bow.
