“Quality and proximity prevail” here on Boulevard Victor. It is a sentiment that echoes through the very stones beneath our feet. Let’s explore this vibrant street together.

Boulevard Victor isn’t just a road. It’s a slice of Marseille life. It connects the Old Port to other key areas. It’s a place where history whispers around every corner.

Did you know that the Saint-Victor neighborhood gets its name from the Abbey of Saint-Victor? This ancient abbey stands as a testament to Marseille’s rich past. It shapes the identity of the surrounding area including Boulevard Victor.

Founded in the late Roman period, the Abbey of Saint-Victor has a fascinating history. It was named after Victor of Marseilles. He was a local soldier saint and martyr. The abbey’s crypts hold artifacts. These artifacts show a quarry from the Greek period. Later, it became a necropolis. This necropolis dates from 2 BC onwards. It lasted until Christian times.

In 415 AD, John Cassian founded two monasteries in Marseille. He had come from the monasteries of Egypt. One was the Abbey of Saint Victor for men. It stood south of the Vieux-Port. The other was the Abbey of Saint Sauveur for women.

The Abbey of Saint Victor faced many challenges. Vikings and Saracens invaded it. In 838, a Saracen fleet destroyed it. Saint Eusebia, the abbess at the time, was martyred with 39 nuns. The Saracens destroyed the Abbey of Saint-Victor again in 923.

Monastic life was restored in 977. This was thanks to Bishop Honorat and Saint Wiffred. Saint Wiffred was the first Benedictine abbot. The abbey recovered quickly. From the 11th century, its abbots helped restore religious life in other monasteries.

Saint Isarn began construction in 1020. He built the first upper church, tower, and altar. Isarn helped free monks of Lérins Abbey from Moorish captivity. He achieved this through his intercession with Ramon Berenguer I.

Blessed Bernard was abbot from 1064 to 1079. Pope Gregory VII sent him as legate to Spain. In reward for his services, St. Victor’s was exempted from all jurisdiction. Only the Holy See had authority.

The abbey had connections with princes of Spain and Sardinia. It even owned property in Syria. The polyptych of Saint Victor and the chartularies document the abbey’s economic importance in the Middle Ages.

Blessed Guillaume Grimoard became abbot in 1361. He later became Pope Urban V in 1362. He enlarged the church and built high walls around the abbey. Urban V granted the abbot episcopal jurisdiction. He visited Marseille in 1365 and 1367. The abbey declined after this, especially from the 16th century.

The abbey’s library was lost. It held ancient manuscripts. It was likely dispersed in the late 16th century.

In 1648, Marseille’s magistrates asked Pope Innocent X to secularize the monastery. The Pope refused. Instead, he had the Congregation of Saint Maur take over the abbey.

The monks’ behavior did not improve. After their conduct during the 1720 plague, Pope Benedict XIII secularized the monastery in 1726. It became a collegiate church.

In 1774, it became a noble chapter. Its members had to be Provençals with noble descents. They bore the title “chanoine comte de Saint-Victor.”

The last abbot was Prince Louis François Camille de Lorraine Lambesc. He died in 1787.

In 1794, the abbey was stripped of its treasures. The relics were burned. The gold and silver were melted down. The building became a warehouse, prison, and barracks. Only the church of St. Victor remains. It was rededicated in 1040 and rebuilt in 1200. The church was restored in the 19th century. Pope Pius XI made it a minor basilica in 1934.

The remains of Saint John Cassian were once in the crypt.

Today, Boulevard Victor offers a blend of the old and the new. It is a place where you can find quality restaurants and shops. This street invites you to stroll and wander. It attracts tourists, hipsters, and locals alike. Stop for a coffee at the Café de l’Abbaye. Visit the Four des Navettes. Continue your walk to the Palais du Pharo. Here, the sky and the sea dominate.

Boulevard Victor isn’t just a street. It’s an experience. It’s a journey through time and culture. It embodies the spirit of Marseille itself.
